DEATHS IN PRISON SINCE 1982

1997

JUAN CARLOS HERNANDO, 35, was found hanged in cell in the Albacete Prison (Spain) on July 20. He was found suspended from a water pipe by a plastic cord, with his hands bound. According to authorities, the prison doctor tried to revive him without success --a "suicide" according to the government.

JOXE MARI ARANZAMENDI ARBURU, 41, was found dead, hung, in his jail cell in Alcala-Meco (Spain) on February 7 --he was found blinfolded, with arms and feet tied --a "suicide" according to the government.

JEAN LUC MAILLET, was found dead in his cell (Paris, France) by prison guards on January 23--a suicide according to the authorities. He was arrested in Aix en Provence on December 3, 1996, and accused of collaborating with ETA.


1995

JAVI GOROSTIZA died of cancer. He was allowed to die at home. He told his family he was denied medical care while in jail at the Herrera de la Mancha Prison (Spain).


1991

JEAN GROIX, 40, was found dead in his jail cell at La Sante Prison (France) in January 1991 --a "suicide" according to the government.

PEIO MARINELARENA, 32, died from AIDS at the Fresnes Prison (France). He requested medical care but was denied. He died two weeks after he was transferred to the Fresnes jail hospital.


1990

MIGUEL ZALAKAIN, 62, died at La Sante Prison (France) in November 1990 --from "natural causes" according to the government. He requested medical care several times but was denied.


1988

MIKEL LOPETEGI LARRARTE, 33, was found dead in his jail cell at the Herrera de la Mancha Prison (Spain) in March 1988 --a "suicide" according to the government.

JUAN CARLOS ALBERDI MARTIARENA, 30. died at the Herrera de la Mancha Prison ( Spain) in June 1988 --a "sudden death" according to the government.


1985

JOSU RETOLAZA JODI, 33, died from skin cancer while being treated for warts. He was allowed to died at home but denied proper care while in jail at the Herrera de la Mancha Prison (Spain).

JOSE RAMON GOIKOETXEA BILBAO, 27, was found dead in his jail cell at the Alcala-Meco Prison (Spain) in June 1985 --a "suicide" according to the government.


1983

JUAN JOSE CRESPO GALENDE, 27, died at the Herrera de la Mancha Prison (Spain) after 97 days in hunger-strike.


1982

JOSEBA ASENSIO ARTARAZ, 27, was found dead in his jail cell at the Herrera de la Mancha Prison (Spain) in January 1982. He died from tuberculosis while undergoing treatment for flu.
